Elizabeth Gaskell and Industrialization Essay Example for Free

Elizabeth Gaskell and Industrialization Essay Two of Elizabeth Gaskell’s novelsâ€North and South and Mary Bartonâ€provide a basic understanding into the author’s endeavor at testing the issues encompassing industrialization in Victorian England. Aside from the way that the two books include female characters as heroes, they additionally feature the great battle among rich and poor classes notwithstanding a rising modern culture. Without forgetting about the progression of the stories’ plots, Gaskell can fuse the crucial parts of industrialization. In North and South, Elizabeth Gaskell expounds on the battles of the urban common laborers in modern England, explicitly in its northern locales, during the nineteenth century as opposed to the ways of life of the individuals who live in the wealthier south. Since the story is appeared from the point of view of the courageous woman, Margaret Hale, Gaskell can show the opposite side of the generalizations ascribed to ladies during the nineteenth century. Generally, ladies around then were scarcely ready to confront their own conditions and address them all alone. Margaret Hale, in any case, challenges the idea that ladies to a great extent rely upon men just to live. She at first opposes that conviction by dismissing sentimental proposalsâ€a move that shows how she is in charge of her lifeâ€and shows it at its most noteworthy when she tosses her arms around John Thornton with an end goal to shield him from the irate crowd. The last shows that it isn't generally ladies who look for the security of men since ladies can likewise ensure men even to the detriment of such ladies. As Patsy Stoneman shows in her book Elizabeth Gaskell, â€Å"[Margaret Hale] goes up against the way that men of all classes are represented, in the open circle, by a manly code,† a code that successfully forestalls the quality of delicacy ascribed to females (Stoneman, p. 86). Margaret’s ability to secure Thornton doesn't just soak up the idea that ladies are delicate and ought not be hurt. It likewise presents that womenâ€especially the individuals who are viewed as pariahs to mechanical zones, for example, Miltonâ€can additionally figure out how to identify with the individuals who are working under destitution. The episode in the story where the laborers were in a negative mark against Thornton, the neighborhood plant proprietor, additionally underlines that an outcast can identify with the burdens and states of the laborers more than the individuals who are legitimately associated with the modern framework. Another intriguing part of Gaskell’s topical investigation of industrialization in North and South is the means by which she had the option to rejoin, so to speak, the classes considered as total inverses. As Dorice Williams Elliott sees in her article: â€Å"the novel bases its case for women’s intercession between classes on a similarity among marriage and class cooperation† (Elliott, p. 25). The nearness of the untouchable, Margaret, in the mechanical town makes it workable for the marriage between the classes to start. Margaret turned into no not exactly an individual who made ready for the better understanding between the rich and poor separation in spite of the fact that her essence alone didn't completely break down the pervasive divergence. Elliott’s perception that Margaret’s intervention prompted class collaboration essentially reaffirms the possibility that ‘class cooperation† in itself despite everything presumes contrasts between social classes. In Mary Barton, the differences between the rich and the poor classes take the state of the account of a dad who looks to shield his little girl from turning into a fallen lady. Like Margaret Hale in North and South, the story spins around the life and battles of Mary Barton in Victorian England. John Barton, Mary’s father, is a millworker who lost a large portion of the individuals from his family aside from Mary. One fascinating piece of the story is when John shot Henry Carson, the child of a rich plant proprietor. Being somebody who profoundly questions the riches variations among rich and poorâ€largely in light of the fact that he was â€Å"chairman at numerous a Trade’s Union gathering; a companion of delegates,† somebody who was â€Å"ambitious of being a representative himself† and a â€Å"Chartist† who was â€Å"ready to do anything for his order† (Gaskell, p. 25)â€John’s homicide of Henry represents how the individuals from the poor class here and there develop urgent. The story is shrewd as in it consummately subsumes the issues encompassing industrialization in Victorian England into the story of a woman’s journey for adoration. Mary Barton is an exemplary case of how Gaskell viably expounds on the issues brought about by industrialization in Victorian England without dismissing the story’s plot. Regardless of the discussions concerning whether Gaskell’s books truly mirror the genuine idea of the Victorian English society during the beginning of the modern time frame, it ought to be reminded that what her books do is to give an anecdotal record of the issues individuals face when managing individuals from another social class. Susan Morgan composes that â€Å"the measure of probability is an improper way to deal with Gaskell’s work† (Morgan, p. 44). For instance, â€Å"it may have all around been far-fetched in Manchester for relations among laborer and boss to discover arrangements through individual friendships† (Morgan, p. 44). Whatever reasons there might be regarding why Gaskell composed as she did, it is sufficient to take note of that North and South and Mary Barton catch the battles of anecdotal characters notwithstanding industrialization. The books might be fiction, best case scenario, yet the condition they suggestsâ€the epic separation among rich and poorâ€remains as genuine today as it once seemed to be. When to Cut Ties With a Longtime Employee

When to Cut Ties With a Longtime Employee Whoever is at work in charge of a team, a department, or an entire company would probably tell you that its always better to have long-term trusting relationships with the people they lead, instead of changing the people they work with often.Although its ideal that you become close with the people you work with, unfortunately, sometimes, uncomfortable situations can be even harder because you guys became so close. This is why sometimes its a blessing in disguise when you dont get work with your colleagues. When you become close, the motivation for work gets higher, but also less strictness and authority is present. After a while, you as a boss, feel that your employee is not performing as he was, or that he doesnt fit the team anymore.Whether or not they are your friend, the person has been in the company a long time, and you know it will be hard to end it, but you need to find a way to cut ties.Well, in this article, we will cover:what ground is there to cut ties with someonehow to end your work relationship with an employee: over the phone or in personwhat to expect after you fire someonepieces of advice for you as a bossAlthough its true that rarely anyone finds easy firing someone, its also true that if there is ground to do it, its always better to do it.Were here to make this process as painless as possible and help you do this!Lets get on it!REASONS FOR CUTTING TIESYou know that time you worked on something with someone, and you didnt enjoy the atmosphere? You just didnt feel comfortable or nice? Surely, you remember at least one of those types of situations. Maybe it was:when you had homework in school which you needed to do in a teamwhen you applied for a hackathon or a case study with people you didnt know wellat your first jobat your current jobThere are a lot of toxic workplaces because people become unpleasant because of stress. It only takes one influential toxic person to spread the unpleasantness through the entire team or organization. Now, weve prep ared for you examples of behavior you as a boss should be on the lookout for.If you see some of these happen, consider your next course of action with that employee, because you might have to fire him/her later. 1.  The employees performance drops excessively. Are they late with delivering what is necessary to their clients? Are they having fewer meetings? Are their results getting worse? An employee is mainly judged by his/her performance. After all, they are there to get the job done.Underperforming is the least toxic behavior, but it can spread easily. If other people see one employee slacking and getting away with it, they might start to do it too.As a boss, you need to be strict with performance because your results depend on others work. Sometimes, underperformance happens because of external factors like the market has changed, or a new competitor appeared.Sometimes it can also be because of private reasons: a baby is on the way, or someone in their family has health issues.Ei ther way, openly talk about performance with the employee and make them know youre there to help with more educational training, or maybe with an altered job description with less work until they are back on their feet.2.  The employee is easily replaced.Sometimes, one of your workers cant get fired because they have a key position for getting the job done on time. This postpones cutting ties, so when you want to fire someone, consider how currently they are vital to the team.If their performance and/or behavior is bad, and the costs of time and money are low for their replacement, there isnt any need for you to worry how this move will affect the companys performance. It will probably be better than before anyway so you will know that you made the right decision.3.  The employee has two jobs.Nowadays its very popular for workers to have a side job.The hustle culture is getting stronger and more and more people to want to become entrepreneurs. Not to mention that a lot of people are g etting into freelancing waters, which can pay nicely. You might sense that your employee isnt fulfilled by his/her work and would like to switch to a different profession. Also, he/she is losing focus because of the other work, which is more interesting. Before cutting ties if this happens, check with them if theres anything you can do to make their current job better.Anyway, it might even be better for them and for you to let them focus on their side gig full time.4.  The employee gossips a lot.As a manager or a boss, its your job to make tough decisions. Those decisions are only made harder because you know not everybody is going to like them. You know those people who openly talk with everyone about how your decision was wrong and that they wouldve made a better one? If you do, then you know how frustrating it is to have them in your firm.People who gossip are tricky because they can be big influencers on your less-experienced employees. So, if you notice that there are gossips spreadi ng around, not only about you or your work but also about other people, be sure to find the source of those stories and confront them about it.5.  The employee isnt accountable. Some workers have a hard time owning up to their mistakes and being accountable. They often play the blame game by shifting the responsibility to their co-workers or subordinates if they are managers. But these people are not hesitant when it comes to accepting praise for the results which they accomplished with someone.Leading unaccountable people is not only unproductive because you never know if theyll do something that theyve promised to do, but also can lead to good employees quitting because they feel that theyre not treated accordingly.Accountability is one of the building blocks of a good performing team, so encourage others to talk with an accountable person as well.6.  The employee put himself/herself before the team.Having a person who puts their own results before the teams results is very hard to m anage.Departments which need to work together, like marketing and sales, need good synergy in order for the company to perform. Its always better to have good team players, so if you have great solo players work with them, so they become one great part of a team!7.  The employee acts like a dictator. If youre higher at the hierarchy in your company, the people who manage people are also your employees. As such, you should also pay attention to how they treat their people because the workers at the lowest level are the ones who are on the field and bringing the results. If your manager is power-hungry the people, he/she leads wont trust him/her.A working environment without trust will never accomplish anything good. When a manager delegates everything and doesnt listen to feedback, employees become unsatisfied, and then they start to work less and worse. So, if you notice that you have a dictator in your team, immediately talk to him/her about that. After all, it could be that theyre just n ot aware of their own bad behavior.HOW TO END IT?At some point, you might see that you and the employee had different visions for the company. They still work for you because of good conditions, or maybe they dont want to look for a new job, but you see that their performance is a mere fraction of what it used to be.You can let the employee know of your decision in a lot of ways:You can phone themYou can let them know in personPeople choose the first two options because theyre easier, of course. However easy it may seem to avoid eye contact for this conversation, we recommend that you do this in person. This move is more valued and respected. Also, if you guys have a friendship, doing this in person is the least you can do.The employee will also better understand you if you do this face-to-face.However, sometimes you really dont have time to do this in person, so we will also cover here on how to let someone go over the phone or via e-mail.1.  Cutting ties in person.i. Prepare to say w hich behaviors led to this. This is very important because your decision should be objective and not subjective.By making them know which exact behavior led to this, not only do you seem more objective, but the person will also know what to work on.Surely there are big reasons for firing them, so name all you can think of:being late for workmissing meetingsnot dressing properlyusing unwanted languagenot doing enough workdisrespecting colleagues etc.Think of it like this if you were fired, wouldnt you want to know why youre fired for, so you know not to make the same mistakes at your next job?Its always better to talk with your employee about these things as soon as they happen, so you know youve tried to fix them. This way your mind is easy because you know that your decision wasnt rash but that you tried and it didnt work out.ii. Have an open direct conversation. When you guys meet, dont wander around the topic. The sooner you talk about the elephant in the room, the better youll bot h feel. For example, you can begin the conversation like this:To be completely honest, Ive invited you to this meeting to talk to you about finding your way to other companies. Im sorry that it had to come to this.Ive thought about it a lot, and Im sure that this is the right thing to do. In the past period *now name the situations which led to this*.Be prepared for a bad dramatic reaction. Whatever their initial reaction is (its probably not going to be a good one), hear them out and try to comfort them professionally. You should remain calm and remember at all times why youre doing this, so you dont give them their job back because of empathy.Make sure that you let them know their time in this company is valued and that you are sure theyll find a new job soon.iii. A complete example.Hello, welcome. I arranged this meeting for us so I can tell you that, unfortunately, this is your last day with us. Ive thought about this a lot, and Ive decided that this is the best course of action for everyone. In the past period you did this, this and this (name the exact bad behavior which led to this) and weve tried to work on fixing these behaviors, am I right? So far, I havent seen progress in your work, which is why Im letting you go.I know that you might want to say a proper goodbye to some people here, you can do that today or tomorrow. These are workdays so you can reach out to them after work hours. I think that theyll appreciate it. I will let everyone know what happened once we are done with the meeting here.I have your final paycheck, which covers everything until today, and I also have a separation agreement for you. This agreement expires in X days, and if you sign it, we can give you $X. I understand that youll probably want to review it.Please collect your stuff from the desk today or tomorrow; we can help you with that.Do you have any questions?2.  Cutting ties over the phone.Although this is the worse option, its sometimes the only one.The employee might be a remote workerYou might be in another country, and this cant waitThey might be currently in another countryFirst, check if you can even do this legally. It might violate the contract, and you might get a lawsuit if that is the case. Once youve checked this, arrange the call and make sure to leave out a lot of time for the conversation.Book it in the time of day when you have time to talk; youre not expecting a short call. They will probably talk to you at least a little.Whether you fire someone over a phone or in person, expect questions concerning:severanceunemployment insurancedetails about termination of benefits etc.AFTERMATH OF CUTTING TIES WITH AN EMPLOYEEWhen you cut ties with a longtime employee expect to feel bad if its your first time doing it.You probably dont like to hurt someone as much as the next guy, so its completely normal that you feel bad.Dont worry; it will pass. Keep in mind that you did this for a reason. One of the most important things to remember to do whe n you cut ties with someone is to take away their access to classified information. They still might have access to their professional e-mails, and nothing is stopping them from sending out e-mails in the companys name. This is unlikely to happen, but know that if people overreact to this, there is no telling what they could do.So, take away their access to the companys:phone numberemailGoogle DriveCRMSocial media profiles etc. What you can also expect when you fire someone is to spend a lot of time making up for their leave. The search for another candidate may be a long one, and even after you find him/her, it will still take some time until they do the job well. When you take this into consideration, it is great to have a suited education cycle ready for the new employee, so they learn the job as fast as possible.Expect to hear people talking about this, especially people who are close to the employee who got fired. Try to understand them as much as you can.Think of how you would feel if your friend got fired from the same company you guys work in.But, if the rumors escalate to an unwanted level, confront openly the ones who are talking about it.PIECES OF ADVICESometimes, if the issues arent big enough for the person to leave the company entirely, consider demoting them or allocating them to a different project. This might be a better solution for both of you. Keep in mind that this person has been in the company for a long time and that his/her experience in it is still valuable to you.Make your final decision on whether you want to fire someone by answering the question What is best for the company?. Making the best call for the company is your job, and you know that the companys needs come first. If you determine that this employee is no longer bringing anything good to the company, or that someone will do everything better than them, then its time to let them go.The more you postpone this decision, the worse it will get. Your companys performance and culture will suffer more and more. Once you decide that its your final decision, execute on it immediately. If its your first-time practice this with someone, you trust. By simulating the conversation, you will prepare for the real one.Dont fire someone without warning. In this article, weve covered a lot of reasons for cutting ties with someone, but as weve mentioned, you should never react on the first impulse. When you notice something bad, immediately talk to the employee about it and be prepared to work it out. Resort to firing them only when youve already tried to work with them on their bad behavior and when youve warned them where their bad behavior leads.Keep the conversation from your side short and simple. Be prepared for the conversation to take time, but you should do the talking for only the necessary part. Let them know the decision is final; you dont want them to start negotiating with you.Try to end the meeting on a positive note. To help the employee try to give them a boo st. Mention what theyve done for the company and how much that was valued. Name their skills and propose jobs that would fit them. If its possible, offer to write them a recommendation letter for future job applying. If youre not close with the employee, consider having a third person present for the conversation. HRs are regularly present at these types of conversations and can be of help when you go through this. Not only are they there as a witness, but also to help with dealing with the employee.FINAL WORDOne of the points to take out from reading this would be to be careful of who we hire and how close we get to meet them. But you really cant predict anything. In different circumstances, you mightve had everything a great friend who you do great work with!Being careful about who you befriend at work isnt recommended. Rather, focus on good selection processes and give immediate feedback on bad work or behavior. You cant find a perfect employee, but you can make one with good commu nication and their willingness to work on their weaknesses. When youre in charge of people, sooner or later youre going to cut ties with someone. This isnt only a bad thing, but a good thing as well. Youre saving yourself from stress in the future, and that person will probably be happier somewhere else. You got this role because you are capable of doing it.This is just another part of the job description.Hopefully, in this article, you found how to do this as nice as possible. We got your back and believe that you can do this!

Hebrews 13 Notes On The Bible - 1019 Words

Hebrews 13:1-5 sets up the conclusion of the book which including a warning about being carried away by â€Å"strange teaching† (13:9), a call to go â€Å"outside the camp† (13:11-14) perhaps in a missional way as well as some final instructions and a personal salutation (13:15-25). Hebrews 13:1-5 is particularly heavy on the rules of the faith It is obvious from the text (5:11-14) that the recipients were struggling to live their faith and this section offers very practical guidelines. Hebrews 11:6 balances this section emphasizing the faith, not behavior alone, is the only way to please God. The first five practical guidelines given in 13:1-6 would have been fairly common in the church during this time frame (Guthrie, G. 434). In the passages that follow contain seven more guidelines that were more aimed at this particular audience (Guthrie, G. 434). Some differences that can be seen from comparing translations reflect the word choices and grammar in the original text. In verse one there is a distinct variation of tone in how love is addressed NRSV, RSV, ESV and NASB all start this verse with the word â€Å"Let† starting the verse with the idea of allowing love to continue whereas TNIV and NIV start the verse with the words â€Å"Keep on† communizing to continue doing. The Detrimental Effects Acid Rain Free Essays

With scientists and so-called â€Å"experts† on the environment disagreeing on so many issues, it is easy for the public to be lost in the fray of what is truth and what is media hype. Though the term â€Å"acid rain† has been present in our society since the early 1970†³s, many people are not exactly clear on what it is what causes it, and the detrimental effects acid rain has on our environment. More confusing than all of the facts and scientific theories surrounding acid rain is the development of a suitable solution to reduce air pollution, which in turn leads to acid rain. We will write a custom essay sample on The Detrimental Effects Acid Rain or any similar topic only for you Order Now Many experts do not agree that acid rain has in fact been caused by man made pollution because of the fact that rain is naturally acidic. This widespread disagreement delayed international action to reduce pollution for some time. However, with the coming of the 1970†³s an awareness of acid rain spread, and with that awareness, possible solutions were proposed. These solutions involved making environmental changes on the international, industrial, and personal levels. Just how does acid rain form, and what consequences does it pose to our environment? There are numerous theories as to the cause of acid rain. However, the most prevalent is the theory that electric generating plants, heating plants, and other industrial plants have been emitting an excess amount of sulfur oxides, nitrogen oxides, and volatile organic chemicals (VOC†s) into the atmosphere. Once these chemicals are in the air, they react with water to form acids and fall back to the earth as precipitation. People who believe acid rain is a natural phenomenon do so because of the fact that carbon dioxide in the air combines with water vapor and produces carbonic acid (Bolch 95). There are several environmental risks that come with acid rain. One of these is the acidification of lakes, resulting in the lakes† inability to sustain the aquatic life. In fact, Norway reported that 18,000 out of 85,000 of their lakes were acidified, and more than half of their fish population has disappeared (Brunee 23). Ground water can also become more acidic because of the way acid rain depletes the natural buffer system of the soil. Studies done in the early ’70†³s indicate immense damage done to the forests, especially in Eastern Europe and in Germany. A sort of â€Å"tree disease† has been destroying a large percentage of the coniferous trees. The effect of acid rain on wildlife could include the contamination of the entire food chain by causing heavy metal accumulation in aquatic life. The effects that acid rain has on humans has not been effectively studied. However, scientists believe that occurrences of respiratory diseases such as asthma may be on the rise. Acid rain is also causing many historical buildings around the world to erode and decay at an increasingly higher rate. Since the early 1970†³s, many efforts have been made to reduce the air pollution that causes acid rain. The United States government passed the first Clean Air Act in 1972. This act established standards of air quality in order to protect public health. It also required states to submit plans for attainment of these standards. The second Clean Air Act passed in1990 took regulation of air pollutant emissions a step further. It called for a further reduction in car tailpipe emissions, as well as mandating the development of cleaner fuels to be used in metropolitan areas. It listed 189 specific toxic chemicals to be regulated as hazardous air pollutants, as well as establishing a new permitting program for stationary sites of industrial air pollution. These sources of air pollution were now required to have an EPA-issued operating permit that specified allowable emissions (Kraft 87). These governmental controls have effectively reduced air pollution in our country, but at what cost? Writer, Michael E. Kraft asks the question that burns in many of our minds. â€Å"How clean is clean enough? How safe is safe enough, considering available technology and costs? † Initiatives to help meet proposed air quality standards are extremely costly, and they impose substantial burdens on the state and local government. The level of spending on air pollution control in 1972 was $8 billion. By 1990 that figure has risen to $30 billion (Meiners 5). Many experts doubt that money was spent wisely by the government, and claim that the same amount of reduction in air pollution could have been attained using half of the money spent if the government was more efficient. Obviously the U. S. overnment has taken a stand against pollution, and has paid the extremely high financial costs. Many people are quick to point the environmental finger at less developed countries and ask why they are not going to such measures to reduce their own pollution. Like many other things, this too comes down to money. There is a drastic inequality among the rich and the poor nations. This has a large impact on the ability of those poorer countries to address environmental concerns. In 1991, the richest 20% of the nations received 85% of the world income, while the poorest 20% received only a mere 1. % (Sandler 20). In order to effectively solve any global problem, the nations who are most affected by the problem, and would benefit the most from a solution must take on an active role in the resolution of the problem. If these countries take an aggressive and public stand on fighting and reducing their own pollution, other countries will follow their lead (Sandler 148). A large group of nations are cooperating in order to solve a global problem; they form a sort of power, or clout that is effective in pressuring other nations to join the fight. Such cooperation and discussion between nations is crucial in olving an environmental problem like acid rain and air pollution because of the fact that one country†s pollution will often harm neighboring countries. If a couple of nations take a stand against pollution while the others sit idly and watch, what benefit will the efforts result in? The fact that the Earth†s population is increasing at a frighteningly high rate is no surprise to most of us. We have heard time and again about the inability of the earth to sustain such a high population. This constant increase in population is causing an extreme increase in energy needs, which is leading to more pollution. Some scientists claim that if the population increase does not stabilize, it will be almost impossible to effectively control and reduce pollution with our current technology and methods of controlling pollution (Sandler 21). Science and technology play an important role in the reduction of air pollution. When there is a better understanding of a problem it can be handled with a greater efficiency. Scientists claim that nitrogen oxide emissions can be lowered through improved efficiency and conservation, especially in residential and commercial uses. Installing low nitrogen oxide burners will reduce the nitrogen oxide emissions. Setting emission standards on vehicles can cut pollution from mobile sources. New vehicles can incorporate improved emissions technology. Sulfur emissions can be reduced through the use of low-sulfur coal and oil, as well as flue-gas desulfurization for power plants. The implementation and use of hydro electricity, solar power, tidal energy, geothermal energy, and wind power have all been proposed as possible solutions to the problem of air pollution. Reducing air pollution is a very complicated task because of the involvement and support it requires from foreign nations, and the industrial world. A much less recognized, but equally important level of involvement is that from the public. It is extremely easy for the public to point their fingers at big business and demand a change for the improvement of our environment, without properly examining their personal effect on the problem. Why is the public seemingly oblivious about the ways that they can help reduce this problem? It is possible that they have been confused by differing opinions, and left out of the process of implementing possible solutions, which has alienated. Consensus among scientists can speed agreement on how to respond to hazards† (Kraft 18). Though this consensus would be ideal, it is not often the case due to growing uncertainties about health and environmental effects. â€Å"A more promising alternative is to improve the way scientists conduct risk assessments and discuss them with the public and stakeholders. Credibility and trust are crucial ingredients in effective assessment and management of risks. Providing opportunities for thorough discussions of the issues at hand and consideration of public views will inspire confidence in any proposed action† (Kraft 18). While some people are simply unaware of the problem of air pollution by the public, others are simply lazy. An extreme dependence on modern conveniences has contributed to this. Driving cars to every possible destination, no matter how near, seems to be an epidemic in this country. Luckily, the cure is a simple one. Alternative forms of environmentally sound transportation are usually readily available to those who are willing to utilize them. Public transportation, car-pooling, bike riding, and walking are just a few ways to cut the pollution that the public sector is responsible for. If the government had not stepped in and taken a stand for the environment, pollution levels would undoubtedly be awful today. The industrial decision-makers are too often blind to the needs and concerns of the environment because of the financial burden that environmental protection entails. And while most of the air pollution does come from industrial sites, we all could and should do our own part to help resolve this problem. Sooner or later we have all got to realize that in order to save the environment from disaster, we are going to have to be willing to sacrifice some of the conveniences that we have become so accustomed to. Theories of reality therapy

In the early 1960’s Dr. William Glasser, a psychiatrist, developed an approach in counseling known as the Reality therapy. This approach stipulates that current relationship and the interaction level of mental processes like thoughts and emotions influence our present behaviors. Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Theories of reality therapy specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More The use of reality therapy in groups creates a people-centered and people-friendly approach in identifying an individual’s responsibility in his or her behavior. A good relationship between the counselor and the counselee is achieved by embracing reality therapy. This therapy can be applied in limitless dimensions such as in education, where participation, relevance and reasoning have a great impact on the education system. There exist various theories of the reality therapy. These include the identity and choice theory. During the early stages of development of the reality therapy, the identity theory was mostly considered. However, later, profound improvements were incorporate to come up with the choice theory. To achieve the desired results of the reality therapy, a considerable amount of assumptions were embraced in the choice theory. This axioms included, nobody can control someone else behaviors, information is the only thing we can give or get from people, life is all about behaving, psychological problems are relationship problems, people are very creative, unsatisfying relationship is the current problem, and painful past events have a great impact on the current behavior. Nonetheless, with all these assumptions, the choice theory helps in redefining freedom and improving the standards of the current relationships. It indentifies the fundamental needs such as power, love, freedom, fun and survival. Therefore, our behaviors are influence by the desire to satisfy these needs. The choice theory is ben eficial in that, it provides adequate guidelines regarding the improvement of individual’s personality and behavior to fit the normal trend of rational human beings. The choice theory considers that people carry around images or perceptions in their brains, both of the anticipation of what they expect and the exact nature of reality. Additionally, children develop images of the kinds of food they value and these images continuously linger in their minds. People’s perceptions need to be continuously replaced by satisfactory alternatives in order to prevent misery caused by the rigid human nature. Clarification of the human behavior is adequately covered by the theory on the pertinent matters that gov ern growth and development of manners. The choice theory of reality therapy is substantially applicable in the classroom management plan in schools. It is effective in boosting the morale of underperforming student. Using this theory, school’s psychologists can provide counseling to students with emotional trauma and behavioral disorders. School counseling creates positive therapeutic rapports and boosts the students’ self-esteem. Additionally, reality therapy is effective in coaching whether in athletics or life skills lessons. It creates a good rapport among the participants, a conducive teaching and learning environment, and a definitive purpose to objectives establishment. Moreover, the application of this theory is important in self-concept improvement, and tackling posttraumatic stress disorders and childhood obesity. During the counseling process, it is essential to incorporate the magnificent aspects of reality therapy. These aspects focus on concentrating on the present situation and avoidance of past regrets or complaints to achieve the outcome for both the counselor and counselee. The counselor needs to have an apparent understanding of the counselee’s behavior to avoid criticizing and blaming him or her. Focusing on the essentials while minimizing passing judgment and coercion significantly encourages the counselees in their resolve to improve their behaviors and personalities. A definite plan should be avoided, but rather suitable alternatives should be offered by the counselor to the counselee to avoid being subjective. How Long Should My Resume Be

How Long Should My Resume Be There are many articles out there on the topic of how long your resume should be. Two that were informative for me are  How Long Should My Resume Be?,  from Great Resumes Fast, and  Resumes for Executive Jobs Tips on Length, Formatting and Style,  by Matthew Rothenberg of TheLadders. My guideline is that if you are a new graduate, your resume should be one page if at all possible. If you have 10 years of work experience, it will probably be two pages. I recommend always having a one-page resume at the ready if you are expecting to work with recruiters. I disagree a bit with the formatting advice from TheLadders. I do not like underlining or changes in font size as a formatting tool. I much prefer the option of Small Caps which you will find under the font menu. Its a great way to create emphasis. Remember, even though you probably wont include graphics in your resume (other than perhaps some nice lines and tasteful shading), your resume is a  work of art. Print it out and make sure it looks professional! Its likely that if you underlined a lot and multiple font sizes you will change your mind quickly about your artistic choice when you look at the document in hard copy.

Private School Application Essay Tips

Private School Application Essay Tips Applying to private school means completing an application, a process with many components. There are short answer questions, forms to fill out, teacher recommendations to collect, standardized tests to take, interviews that need to be scheduled, and an application essay that needs to be written. The essay, for some applicants, can be one of the most stressful parts of the application process. These eight private school application essay tips just might help you produce the best essay youve ever written, which could increase your chances of getting accepted at your dream school.   1. Read the directions. This seems obvious, but hear me out. Reading the directions carefully can help ensure that you accomplish the task at hand. While most directions will be straightforward, you never know if the school is going to ask you to address specific questions on the given topic. Some schools also require that you write more than one essay, and if you just assume you get to pick from the three options when you were actually supposed to write three short essays, well  that is certainly a problem. Pay attention to word counts that might be given, too. 2. Be thoughtful in your writing sample. Leading off from that last sentence of bullet one, pay attention to the requested word count, you need to be thoughtful in how you approach the assignment. Word counts are there for a reason. One, to make sure that you give enough detail to actually say something meaningful. Dont cram in a bunch of unnecessary words just to make it longer.   Consider this essay prompt: Who is someone you admire and why?  If you simply say, I admire my mom because she is great, what does that tell your reader? Nothing useful! Sure, you answered the question, but what thought went into the response? A minimum word count is going to make you actually put some more effort into the details. Make sure that as you write to reach the word count that you arent just putting random words down that dont add to your essay. You need to actually put some effort into writing a good story - yes, youre telling a story in your essay. It should be interesting to read.   Also, remember that writing to a specific word count doesnt mean that you should just stop when you hit the required 250 words either. Few schools will penalize you for going over or under a word count slightly  but dont obliterate the word count. Schools provide these as guidelines to get you to put in some effort to your work, but also prevent you from going overboard. No admission officer wants to read your 30-page memoir as part of your application, no matter how interesting it may be; honestly, they dont have the time. But, they do want a brief story that helps them get to know you as an applicant.   3.   Write about something that matters to you. Most private schools give you an option of essay writing prompts. Dont choose the one that you think you should choose; instead, opt for the writing prompt that most interests you. If youre invested in the topic, passionate about it even, then that will show through in your writing sample. This is your chance to show who you are as a person, share a meaningful experience, memory, dream or hobby, which can set you apart from the other applicants, and thats important.   Admission committee members are going to read hundreds, if not thousands, of essays from prospective students. Put yourself in their shoes. Would you want to read the same type of essay over and over? Or would you hope to find an essay from a student thats a little different and tells a great story? The more interested you are in the topic, the more interesting your final product will be for the admission committee to read.    4. Write Well. This should be obvious, but it must be stated that this essay should be written well, using proper grammar, punctuation, capitalization, and spelling. Know the difference between your and youre; its and its; and there, their, and theyre. Dont use slang, acronyms, or text-speak.   5. Write. Edit/Revise. Read it Out Loud. Repeat.   Dont settle on  the first words you put down on paper (or type on your screen). Read your admission essay carefully, review it, think about it.  Is it interesting? Does it flow well? Does it address the writing prompt and answer any questions that were asked? If you need to, make a checklist of things you need to accomplish with your essay and make sure when you review it that youre actually meeting each requirement. To ensure that your essay flows well, a great trick is to read it out loud, even to yourself. If you stumble while reading it out loud or struggle with what youre trying to get across, thats a sign that you need to revise. When you recite the essay, you should easily move from word to word, sentence to sentence, paragraph to paragraph.   6. Get a Second Opinion. Ask a friend, parent or teacher to read your essay and give an opinion. Ask them if it reflects you as a person accurately and if you truly completed the requirements on your checklist. Did you address the writing prompt and answer any questions that were asked?   Also get a second opinion on the writing style and tone. Does it sound like you? The essay is your chance to showcase your own unique writing style, tone of voice, personality, and interests. If you write a stock essay that feels cookie cutter and overly formal in nature, the admission committee isnt going to get a clear idea of who you are as an applicant. Make sure the essay you write is genuine.   7. Make sure the work is truly yours.   Taking the lead from the last bullet, make sure your  essay is genuine. This is extremely important. Teachers, parents, admission consultants, secondary school counselors, and friends can all weigh in on it, but the writing needs to be 100% yours. Advice, editing, and proofreading are all fine, but if someone else is crafting your sentences and thoughts for you, youre misleading the admission committee. Believe it or not, if your application doesnt accurately reflect you as an individual, you can jeopardize your future at the school. If you apply using an essay you didnt write (and makes your writing skills look better than they actually are), the school will eventually find out. How? Because its school, and youre eventually going to have to write an essay for your classes. Your teachers will quickly assess your writing abilities and if they dont line up with what you presented in your application, there will be an issue. The private school youve been accepted to may even dismiss you as a student if youre deemed to be dishonest and not capable of managing the academic expectations.   Basically, applying under false pretenses and passing off someone elses work as yours is a major problem. Using someone elses writing  is not only  misleading but can also be considered plagiarism. Dont google sample admission essays  and copy what someone else has done. Schools take plagiarism seriously, and starting off your application like this  isnt going to help.   8. Proofread. Last but not least, proofread, proofread, proofread. Then have someone else proofread. The last thing you want to do is spend all this time and effort to create an awesome private school application essay and then discover that you misspelled a bunch of words or left out a word somewhere and ruin what could have been an awesome essay with some accidental mistakes. Dont just rely on spellcheck either. The computer recognizes both that and than as properly spelled words, but they certainly arent interchangeable.   Good luck!

Financial Analysis for Managers II Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Financial Analysis for Managers II - Essay Example It is a fixed amount paid on annual basis (Myers & Allen, 2005). This amount might be constant for a certain period of time or may have a steady trend for some time and may fluctuate otherwise. The annuities and the time value of money are related and affected by certain factors. These are as follows; Interest rates are the prevailing charges of availing the facility of the capital that might have been invested in an interest generating instrument or a bank account. The interest rates of advancing loans and paying on the deposits are different and that the difference is actually the monetary reward of utilizing that capital. However, the actual value of money, even when the principal amount is added up with the total interest amount received as an annuity, is normally different from what it was at the time of blocking that money into the respective reserve under question. This may have a different affect on the compounded interest approach. Since the interest is compound, therefore it yields a higher amount at each step and thus even the actual value of the total of that amount might be more than the amount actually invested depending on the terms, policies and interest rates. This introduces the concept of the present value of future payments and/or income(s) that are expected to be received (Myers Allen, 2005). This means that the present value always differs from the future value. The idea is also related to the fact about the future value of any of the long term and/or even short term investments that were made. They will seldom be equal in real terms, even when they seem to be equal as an annuity. The most commonly applied model of the time value of money is our same old compounded interest model. An amount of money 'C' for 't' years at a rate of interest of 'I'% (where interest of 15 percent" is expressed also as 0.15) compounded on annual basis, the present value of the receipt of C, t years in the future, is: Ct = C(1+i)-t = C/(1+i)t The expression (1 + i)t is a generic form of calculating almost al sorts of present value. Where the interest rate is deemed to be something which is not constant figure over the period of the investment(s), different values for 'I' may respectively be used; an investment over a two year period would then have PV (Present Value) of: PV = C(1+i1)-1.(1+i2)-1 Present value is additive. This means that the present value of a bundle of cash flows is the sum of each individual's present value. If there are no risks involved in the project i.e. the project is deemed to be risk free, the expected/forecasted rate of return from the project must equal or exceed this rate of return or else it would be better to rather invest the capital investment in these (potentially) risk free assets. If there are risks involved in any such investments or a project ventures this can be reflected through the use of a 'risk premium'. The risk premium that is required can easily be found by comparing the investment with the rate of return required from other similar projects with similar risks (Ross & Westerfield, 2007). Thus it is possible for almost all investors to take account of any uncertainty or risk factor

Analyze temples Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Analyze temples - Essay Example The Belvedere Temple is the only remaining above ground Etruscan temple, since most Roman temples were built on top of the Etruscan temple’s ruins. The only remains of the Belvedere Temple are a partial stone wall and stone rubble. The wood roof is long gone. There is evidence of the two rows of pillars familiar to the Etruscan temples. The temple had three equal cells (Brenders). There is no evidence of what god or goddess this particular temple was built for. We can only imagine what type of religion the people who built the temple observed. Since the temple is so old, the architect is unknown. Etruscan temples like the Belvedere Temple were the inspiration for the latter Roman and Greek temples. One Roman temple built with an Etruscan influence was the Parthenon. The Parthenon was built on the Acropolis in Athens. The Parthenon was built to worship the goddess Athena. This temple was built of the Doric order. This temple was built from 447 to 432 B.C., under the leadership Of Pericles, by the architects Ictinus and Callicrates (Parthenon). The Pantheon was a rectangle building made of marble, with a central room separated by a wall (Parthenon). In one room was a statue of Athena. A walkway created a path around the center rooms. These walkways were in the shadows of the columns around the building. There were seventeen columns on the side, with eight columns on the end (Parthenon). Through out the years the Parthenon has been a temple to Athena, a Christian church dedicated to the Virgin Mary and a Mosque under Ottoman rule (Parthenon). Eventually the beautiful marble building was left in ruins after warfare in 1687. A Venetian general blew off the roof when the Ottoman sol diers used Acropolis as a garrison for their army (Parthenon). In the end, a variety of people worshiped at a temple built for Athena. The Greeks built their own temple for all of the

Euthanasia and Assisted Suicide are Murder :: Euthanasia Physician Assisted Suicide

Euthanasia is Murder Euthanasia - is it killing or letting die? In the last thirty years, this has been a highly controversial topic, the worldly morals versus the Christian. Although there are certain instances where it is justifiably considered to be letting die, it is essentially murder. Euthanasia comes from a Greek word, meaning "easy death," and is now often associated with the infamous Dr. Kevorkian. There are three types of euthanasia - what doctors consider to be "letting the patient die," for instance taking both conscious and unconscious patients off of life support, not reviving the patient in case of a heart failure, et cetera. There is also assisted suicide. Dr. Kevorkian and his suicide machine have made themselves known through this technique. The machine injects a lethal dosage into the "patients" blood stream, killing then painlessly within ten minutes. The first type mentioned above is known as "active voluntary euthanasia." This is where a conscious, mentally competent person, usually with a severe physical ailment, loses the will to live. Many have said that keeping them alive is just prolonging their death, a form of cruel and unusual punishment. They may ask that life support equipment be disconnected so that they can die quickly, painlessly, with dignity. Most doctors are trained to try their best to defeat death, or at least try to delay it as long as possible. But if the patient is hopelessly ill, and would prefer to die, the doctor may consult the hospital ethics committee, and take him or her off of life support. When taken to court in these issues, the doctors defend themselves in saying, "I didn't kill him, I let him die." This is illegal throughout the United States and the rest of the world, but it still is a common occurrence. The second type, "passive voluntary euthanasia," is done when a terminally ill patient's or a patient in a persistent vegetative state's (PVS) family chooses to take their loved one off of life support. Government Intervention: Airbus and Boeing

Government Intervention at Boeing and Airbus Towards the beginning of aircraft manufacturing, Boeing and McDonnell Douglas stood as the leading aircraft manufacturers on a global scale. Working alongside the U. S. Department of Defense, Boeing received multiple contracts aiding the industry with tax breaks and infrastructure support. Meanwhile, Spain, France, Germany, and Britain formed an alliance to help start the second most leading aircraft manufacturer, Airbus. Since democratic socialism was the current system in Europe, it was customary for the government to play such a large role. Thus, Airbus received billions of Euros in subsidies and soft loans from these founding governments. Not only did their money nurture the birth of Airbus, but also helped this company to continue to succeed and compete against Boeing. In their defense, EU officials claimed that this stimulated approximately 53,000 jobs, created a large capital in Europe, and generated massive tax revenues. By the 2000 ’s, Airbus ended up exceeding Boeing’s sales, which led the United States to bring the case to the World Trade Organization. On the contrary, EU came back with a counter-claim stating that the United States had massive defense contracts with Boeing, and even an alliance with Japanese business partners such as Kawasaki and Mitsubishi. The Japanese partners, alone, funded $1. 5 billion in soft loans. The heavy subsidies and soft loans provided by the EU can be considerably unfair in the development and success of Airbus. With the support of the four countries Spain, France, Germany, and Britain, Airbus is practically incapable of failing. The main issue to be argued is not how the governments of the four founding countries helped the birth of Airbus, but how the millions of dollars in aid and â€Å"loans† are allowing Airbus to quickly gain market share and help surpass Boeing’s annual sales. Airbus has several advantages in terms of gaining such a healthy su pport from the EU governments. For example, they can cut their costs in production, and use those finances towards market research, and better understanding and mastering the market.According to BBC News Article â€Å"Europe Considers Airbus Soft Loan†, the aid helped Airbus gain the A350 aircraft at a lower price, and thus compete in the same market as Boeings 787 Dreamliner. In terms of Europe’s history of socialism, it is more acceptable for such government aid since the government plays a large role in mass transit. However, these loans and grants still cross the line, and the government has intervened too much in such a private industry. At the same time, the U. S. military contracts are equivalent to subsidiaries. Although the U. S. military has defense contracts with Boeing, they do not own Boeing. The U. S. military would not want a foreign country producing its defensive weapons. It makes sense that they would be involved in contracts with the largest global ai rcraft manufacture in the United States. It is felt by the United States government that contracts with the United States military are not the same as direct grants from the United States government. Through this arrangement, Boeing receives an unfair advantage. Over the years, Boeing has received $23 billion United States taxpayer dollars. Boeing also received infrastructure support and tax breaks from the government. In 2010, the WTO found Airbus to be illegal because they had acquired $20 million dollars in EU aid. It appears that the Americans are helping to fund Boeing, while the Europeans aid Airbus. Much like it’s French competitor, Boeing enjoys considerable benefits from the state of Washington. Boeing employs more than 80,000 people in Washington State; providing high salary, high skill jobs to Washingtonians. In order to keep the company’s headquarters in state, Washington has provided significant corporate tax breaks and infrastructure support. State tax dol lars are used to make sure doing business is easy in Washington. At this point, evaluating fairness is pure conjecture. It can be argued that the USA’s lawsuits against European subsidies provided to Airbus are hypocritical, if Washington is offering government benefits as well. Washington operates in a legal grey area when it comes to international trade. As Washington is not it’s own country, it cannot be held to World Trade Organization standards. The US government argues that the tax-breaks and infrastructure development provided by Washington State are miniscule when compared to the billions provided in subsidies and soft loans to Airbus.Washington’s tax breaks and infrastructure assistance are obviously advantageous for Boeing. Judging whether it gives Boeing an unfair competitive advantage is, again, pure conjecture. It is beneficial to recognize how small such advantages seem when compared to the billion dollar subsidies offered to Airbus and the defense contracts offered to Boeing. Airbus generates a huge amount of money and employs thousands of people in the world. Currently the European Union is supporting the company financially through multiple loans. The Airbus Company is not responsible for paying back their past debt unless they make a profit. Boeing has brought about multiple lawsuits in regard to the government support, and believes that Airbus would not be able to continue if they were not supported by the European Union. It can be suggested that the European Union will not discontinue support to Airbus because of the 53,000 people who are employed by the company. Airbus also generates a lot of money for Europe and would not only cost the jobs of 53,000 people, but also a huge market for European profits. The European Union’s support of Airbus is in its best interest of the economy for Europe. There would be a huge loss of jobs for Europe and the economy would be directly affected. The benefits from Airbus to Europe are much more valuable to them than the money they may be losing from their investment. At the same time, Boeing is also benefiting from the support of the United Nations. In recent years, the government has been supporting Boeing as means of competing with the European government support towards Airbus. In the event that the world trade organization rules against Airbus, and tells it to stop providing subsidies, Airbus will most likely find alternative ways to preserve their company. They would most likely find different ways to provide loans. They would also argue that this is what the US is doing, like the subsidies they’ve received from Japan. Maintaining the aircraft industry is very difficult because there are many expenses that go into making and conserving an aircraft. Airbus would have to seek help elsewhere to assist with the finance so that they could turn a profit while still holding up competition with Boeings newer aircraft.Although this is most likely what they would do, a new approach that could help them without using subsides is finding newer and more effective forms of technology. Inputting newer technological advances would make the Airbus airplane more desired than the Boeing airplanes. New technologies may include a fuel-efficient airplane, or an airplane built with more comfort; by making the aircraft more appealing and run cheaper, they might be able to beat out the competition of Boeing without help from the government. This approach is how Airbus can again be a leader in the global commercial aircraft industry.
